About 3 hours away from Tacloban, we journeyed going to another province in Eastern Visayas, Biliran Island wherein a tourist attraction is founded on organic agriculture.
Canaan Hill Farms and Honey Garden is a land flourishing with vegetation and animals. Who would thought that years before now, the place that attracts many tourists now was just once a feeding ground for cattle.
But with the diligence of husband and wife tandem, Eduardo and Priscilla, plus their children, the Espinazo family converted the plain grassland into an organic farm that is now an attraction in the province.
As we arrived in the farm, we were welcomed with a a local delicacy called “Koping” in Waraywaray, or”Paking” or “Kabkab” for Bisaya which is made from organic Cassava Roots sweetened by honey.
The 6-hectare uphill organic farm is named “Canaan,” after the promised land of God to Noah in the Book of Genesis.
Canaan Hill Farms and Honey Garden practices diversified natural farming method. This method utilizes every natural resources in the farm to sustain all its components – plants, trees, animals, insects – in order to create a complete ecosystem.
The farm sports of more than 30 varieties of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. It also has lots of different animals that are raised organically, like chickens, goats and sheeps.
Should you wish to visit Canaan Hill Farms and Honey Garden, you must remember that there are house rules you need to take care of.
Aside from the tours, the farm produce both fresh and processed products that Canaan Hill Farms and Honey Garden produce like Peanut butter, Turmeric powder, A-Yul Ginger tea powder, Lemon Honey, Four Seasons Juice, Organic, Vegetable burger and many other products.
Canaan Hill Farms and Honey garden is open to the public from 9AM to 5PM every Monday to Saturday for just P 50 as entrance fee. The farm currently entertains day tour only.
Too bad that we only had a short amount of time to go around the farm, but with the briefest moment at Canaan Hill Farms, I believe that the place has not yet come to its peak, and it has a very promising future. I hope that the Espinazo family will take their journey into organic farming even further.
